Humanity may have reached a state of disequilibrium and seems evolutionary stagnant. Even as our world is falling apart, humanity, climate, resource depletion, capacity, population explosion, etc, every aspect of our existence on earth has either reached saturation point or surpassed all limits of sustainability. It seems there are now only two opposing states of being, in which humanity either seizes the moment and recognises the opportunity to ‘change the world’ – by becoming more conscious, aware, alive, healthy, and actively making the best of things – or we carry on experiencing disillusionment, misinformation, disadvantage, depression, hopelessness, dehumanisation, deception, abduction, addiction, psychosis, displacement, disturbance, etc.
Psychological equilibration is the motivational element that guides cognitive development. As humans, we have a biological need to make sense of what we encounter, in every aspect of life, and to respond and act according to that perception or understanding. This is where equilibration applies itself, if a susceptible person is confronted with information that does not fit into their previously held ideology or commitment, disequilibrium will occur, so that person will respond defensively or aggressively toward the source of the information, be it good or bad. Incongruence can be dealt with in three ways; ignore the newly discovered information, assimilate the information into one’s own narrative, or accommodate the information by modifying it to fit one’s agenda – in either case, a state of equilibrium is restored, but temporary.
There are examples of this human balancing act everywhere, but especially in the fastest and most developed society in the world, America …. the current state of ‘the most powerful nation’ of a polarised population and disrupted political leanings and influence between two competing ideological positions of positive and negative.
